What are the Prerequisites?

A-level Economics is typically studied by students aged 16–18 after completing GCSEs (or equivalent). Prior study of Economics is not required, as the course starts from first principles. Most schools expect students to have strong GCSE passes in English and Mathematics (usually grade 5 or above), reflecting the subject’s focus on clear written analysis, data interpretation, and logical reasoning rather than advanced maths. A-level Economics is well suited to students who are academically capable, curious about real-world issues, and comfortable developing structured arguments supported by evidence.

Microeconomics

  • Economic methodology, market structures, and labour markets.
  • Market failure, externalities, and government intervention.
  • Behavioural economics and the economics of information.

Macroeconomics

  • Economic performance: growth, inflation, and unemployment.
  • Fiscal, monetary, and supply-side policies.
  • International trade, exchange rates, and global development.
  • Financial markets, inequality, and macroeconomic objectives.

Examination Skills

  • Structuring 10-, 15, and 25 mark essays for analysis and evaluation.
  • Building strong introductions, diagram analysis, and paragraph linkage.
  • Applying data effectively and integrating theory into real-world contexts.

Assessment & Feedback

  • Diagnostic assessment at enrolment to establish a baseline and create a personalised study plan.
  • Mock papers marked using examiner standards with annotated feedback on AO1–AO4.
  • Progress tracking through half-termly reports and target setting.
  • Final exam-readiness review with predicted grade and individual improvement actions.

All BrainyBeaks tutors hold enhanced DBS clearance and many are qualified teachers (PGCE/QTS) or former examiners for A-Level Economics.
